December 4 – Christmas Cards
We did send cards, not a lot though. Melvin liked the Currier and Ives style, with a little cottage scene in the snow. So, we often had a card in this theme. I remember visiting the Hamler’s (Calvin and Antoinette) at Christmas time and they had hundreds of cards decorating their walls. I was amazed as a child, I had never seen so many cards!
Now that I’m older I like to buy cards with Cats on them, because I love cats, no surprise there. Anyway, I will keep this tradition alive a little longer even though I always send more cards than I receive because I enjoying sending them. I especially love the handmade cards and Christmas newsletters and I always enjoy reading what people have written.
I wish I would have saved more of the Christmas cards I received over the years, at 58 years old, I can only imagine how amazing they would be now! So, my advice is to save more things you receive over the years, they make great heirlooms. And just think how much your great-great-great-great-great grandchild would appreciate these rare treasures someday. Also, take time to capture stories and memories before it’s too late, if you don’t you will wish you did one day. Or should I say I wish I had taken more pictures and asked more questions!
